Ever used Linux?
So...I was wondering. You, Windows guys out there ever used Linux?
I do now and I'm very pleased of it. It didn't crash until now.Windows would've crashed ~3 times 'til now.
Nexuiz loads in....1 SEC!!! RocketMinsta servers load as fast as normal servers. Regularly on my Windows installment it'd have open after 5 secs and load a RM server in ~20 secs.
Internet browsing is too damn smooth. EVEN FACEBOOK GAMES work with full speed. It doesn't on Windows.
Graphics are amazing! You can change transition, open, close, minimize effects. I chose myself fire and beam up effects. They look too damn great.

I'm a bit late but yeah i used openSuse for a few years, then i had Ubuntu:) I love Linux because u can do anything u want, do some effects and Nexuiz runs faster there than it does on Windows:D But now i changed to Windows 7 again because all my games don't run on Ubuntu, and the emulator Wine is not as good as i thought.

Re: Ever used Linux?
yea the fact that many programs don't run as good as on Windows is quite disappointing, but it did help me with some development on my android phone, even though i totally failed

Re: Ever used Linux?
Sounds like a trick quesiton. I do think there are many different opinions. I personally like debian based distros - but maybe thats because I´m used to them. My next destop distro will probably be crunchbang. For starting ubuntu might be a good choice - because it´s easy to use, well documented and has a helpful community.

Well, it depends on your needsvega wrote:Which linux is actually the best one? Or am i mistalen that there aredifferent kinds?

-For newbies, Ubuntu or Mint or other Debian-based distributions
-For developers, Fedora, OpenSUSE, Gentoo
-For servers, CentOS
-For geeks, Arch Linux (in my opinion the best distribution, but it comes with no X Server or GUI, so it might be tricky even to connect it to the Internet)
There are also hundreds of other minor distros, which are basically modifications of what i listed above
For example, there is an Arch Linux distro which includes an X Server, NVIDIA Drivers and nearly all good open-source games, but it is outdated (it includes Nexuiz 2.5 :O )

Re: Ever used Linux?
Ah - one moment - I don´t like Centos at all, not even for servers. Much nicer is an ubuntu server or - to be on the safe side - a debian server. Depending on how up to date the packages have to be. But also redhead or suse have enterprise server distributions.
Fedora and Suse can also be used by newbies (vice versa debian for developers) - the main difference in my opinion is that they have a good native support for KDE and the attached programs. Whereas Debian would be better for Gnome. Though once you get the hang of Unity in Ubuntu it´s actually quiet nice to have a search filter for programs and files instead of a clumsy start menu.
Arch Linux for Geeks - thats probably true. Also slackware.
Interesting are also Linux distributions which only run in ram like damnsmallLinux or puppy linux.

Re: Ever used Linux?
for me, Fedora and SUSE are a bit complicated because of yum and rpm package methods. i just got used to apt-get and pacman :p

Re: Ever used Linux?
Forget everything i have ever said in here! There is a new distro around : Manjaro! It is based on Arch Linux, but includes all possible drivers and a GUI too . It also has nVidia Optimus support out-of-the-box !!! Tried to install it yesterday, but my USB is a total buster...

Re: Ever used Linux?
I'm running on ubuntu for some years now. Reason I moved away from windows was due to the fact that I use a very low spec netbook. On linux, resources are used much better. In my configuration, nexuiz will only run acceptable under linux.
BTW, I just reconfigured our server with debian. Installation is much better than the previous one. Now we need Vega to put the server up with the correct files.
Cheers Kwak

Re: Ever used Linux?
Ok found it and server is up and running but we lost all the records :/ Since its linux it doesn't create a server.db file (or at least i dont find it) which stores the records. On the last operating system the server most have created it somewhere as a hidden file but that is lost now sorry all!
