Ingress, a Google augmented reality game in the real world

Post by unic_sorin on Tue Jul 08 2014, 10:53

Hello,
I would like to show you a game that I found a few months ago, called Ingress.
It's a game developed by Niantic Labs, a Google department and it's available on Android phones but iOS people would get also the game for their devices during this year.

This game is a CTF type, and you actually have to move around the Google map with the phone in order to play it.
It has 2 teams or factions, called Enlightened (green) and Resistance (blue).
They had to take down, conquer and link portals across the world and gather territory on the map.

Portals are placed almost everywhere it exist a statue, monument, historical building, pub, mural art, graffiti, fountain, church, business center or any other permanent designed thing that is unique.

Portals are created by going next to that kind of places and submitting a photo of them through the game.
The places submitted would be approved or not by Niantic in about a couple of months (because people suubmit thousands of portals / day across the world).

The portals are available in the scanner and they can be hacked in order to get resources that could be used to attack enemy portals and neutralize, to capture neutralized portals and to upgrade portals that are captured by your faction in order to resist enemy attacks or to bring more resources to hackers.

Portals are linked together using their keys. To link a portal with another one, you have to get the key of the portal that you want to link with. Links cannot be created across other links and also can't be created if the zone is placed inside of a field.

If you link 3 portals together, you create then a field, colored with your faction color, green or blue.

Create as many links and fields as you can and take down the enemy fields, links and portals in order to conquer the world Smile

The story of the game:

All happened to Niantic Labs, at CERN, where few developers take the decision to communicate with Shapers, an alien species, and connect with them through a portal across our worlds.

The Shapers found that humanity is too much under their level of evolution and sent us an energy form called XM (Exotic Matter).

Whoever gets in contact with XM, got a very high level of intelligence but also got controlled by the Shapers.

People found about this project and splitted in 2 factions, mentioned above:

Enlightened, took part with Shapers on their plan to conquer the world and take control over it on their path to evolution.
Resistance were against this and tries to save the humanity of getting in control by Shapers.

There are actually 600 millions of people playing across the world. Get the game here: http://ingress.com

Have fun!

buy a cheap one that has at least 780px screen, the game isn't taking too much graphical and memory resources. But at least get a phone that has a good GPS reciever, otherwise it would be a pain in the ass to play it because your position may change without moving, or you can lose signal.

I would recommend you the following models:

Samsung galaxy s3 mini,
Samsung galaxy s advance,
Sony Xperia E1, Xperia M, Xperia Go

Lg L9 (L7 has poor gps).
Lg nexus (any)

they are all about or bellow 150 E.

consider also buying an external power bank, because the battery will drain soon (the game is very addictive), and you may got empty battery soon.

I would recommend at least a 5200 mAh powerbank, any model you find.
This would charge your phone at full level for at least 2 times.

Stay away of direct-mounting external batteries, or the ones that had below 5000 mAh, because the connector may break if they mount directly to the phone.

Also consider batteries that has 2 USB ports, so you can charge 2 phones at once :p

all powerbanks of about 5000 mAh cost around 15-30 E.

meh? Very Happy

this is the formula used to calculate how many times the powerbank will charge your phone at full level:

((powerbank capacity - 30%) / phone battery capacity.

example:

if powerbank has 5200 mAh and your phone battery capacity is 1500 mAh

((5200 - 1560) / 1500 = 2.42 => 2 times
